IORT (Intraoperative Radiation Therapy):

For patients over age 50, who have early stage breast cancer that has not spread, and who meet other specific criteria, IORT may offer the following benefits:

  • All of the needed radiation can be delivered at one time
  • Smaller radiation dose than external beam radiotherapy
  • Nearby healthy organs and tissues receive less radiation
  • Patients avoid the inconvenience of 4-6 weeks of daily treatment sessions
  • Cosmetic outcomes are improved since skin and tissue are not exposed to ongoing treatments
