High-Risk Breast Cancer Surveillance

High-Risk Breast Cancer Surveillance is designed for patients with an increased risk of breast cancer based on family or genetic history or other risk factors from a breast risk assessment exam. Within Palm Beach Health Network’s Norma E. and Miles M. Zisson Comprehensive Breast Center of the Palm Beaches at Good Samaritan Medical Center, we offer a breast cancer surveillance program designed for high-risk people. Compared to average-risk, high-risk people are more likely to be diagnosed with cancers with unfavorable prognoses such as larger breast cancers, node-positive cancers and interval cancers

How is My Risk for Breast Cancer Calculated?

Your lifetime risk of breast cancer is based on your family history and  other factors, including:

  • Older age
  • Family history of breast and/or ovarian cancer, especially in firstor second-degree relatives
  • Personal history of breast cancer
  • Older age at menopause
  • First menstruation age
  • Have not had a full-term pregnancy or had first child after age 30 • Obesity • Personal or family history of certain genetic mutations, including BRCA1 and BRCA2
  • History of chest radiation therapy under age 30
  • Dense breast tissue on mammography
  • History of certain “high-risk” lesions on breast biopsy, such as atypical ductal hyperplasia, atypical lobular hyperplasia, or LCIS

Benefits

  • Patient-centered care
  • Treatment from Breast Surgeon
  • Early detection is when it’s most treatable
  • Access to high-resolution breast screening technologies

Monitoring Your Breast Health

For those who are considered high-risk, in addition to breast self-examinations, we recommend participating in our high-risk breast cancer surveillance program. When cancer is found early enough, it’s often small and may require only surgery instead of chemotherapy.

An annual mammogram is your first line of defense behind physical self- and clinicalexaminations. Our 3D mammography technology is designed to help identify cancer earlier with sharper and expedited images, reducing follow-up appointments by up to 40%.

  • BREAST MRI In addition to your annual mammogram, we recommend having a breast MRI, a sensitive imaging test which detects abnormalities in the breast. If for medical reasons you are unable to have an MRI, a contrast-enhanced mammogram, molecular breast imaging, or a whole breast ultrasound may be considered.

  • MEDICATIONS There are certain hormone-blocking medications that have been studied and have shown to lower the risk of breast cancer in high-risk women.

  • GENETIC TESTING By investigating your family medical history and undergoing testing to identify gene mutations, we can help determine your risk for certain types of cancer. Before and after genetic testing, we provide counseling sessions, during which we will help you understand the complex results and outcomes in order to make informed decisions.

  • SURGERY For those with a very high risk of breast cancer, surgery is also an option. The removal of both breasts can lower the risk of breast cancer by over 90%
